Henry David Thoreau, born July 12, 1817, poet, abolitionist, surveyor, historian, American transcendentalist, is best known for his book, Walden, a chronicle of his two-year experiment in simple living in a cabin he built on Ralph Waldo Emerson's land near Walden Pond.
